In today's era airline travelers face myriad menu of delays and long stop over. Well, it's not always the airlines that are responsible for this vacuum in time, newer rules and regulations require travelers to reach airport at least two to three hours early. Then, of course there are delayed flights.
Long layovers are boring and frustrating and mostly you will find yourself thinking how to pass those tedious, dull hours at an unknown airport. My job requires me to fly around the world and during these trip when I have devised ways to pass the time on the airport:
- Relax, take a deep breath and think about the way you feel. Don't think about your hatred for airports rather think about the fun and interesting ways to pass the time, in other words try to change your mental state. Try to be friendly with the airports.
- People watching can be good time pass and can really eat plenty of time. Watch different people, their culture, listen to their languages, attitudes and gestures. Try if you can interpret what they all are talking about. Grab a bottle of water or a cup of coffee and then spend some time just watching groups, people and different people interact. It's real fun!
- Find a free Wi-Fi hot spot and surf the net. Most airports offer free Wi-Fi access while some may charge for it as per usage. This is a real good time to put your productive hat and finish all of the pending work.
- Do you remember the last time when you really send someone a postcard? Basically every airport has these bookstores which keep these postcards related to the state or city you are in. Buy some and pen some words to friends and family. You can even try sending one to yourself, read it some time later; the comments will surely bring that great smile on your face. You can also take out a note pad and write down some things to-do list or some things you wan to achieve. You will be surprised at the things that come out.
- Well, here's one thing that most of the people fins difficult to do. Talking to a stranger. This can be a bit uncomforting for you, but let me tell you it's most likely to create a fascinating conversation.
- Most of the airports have those interesting museums which change displays almost every month. Recently, I traveled through Atlanta Airport and saw this interesting display of stone figures which were hand carved. Now I have interesting had carvings from all over the world which I shared with a few friends over dinner. It was a fantastic thing for every one.
- If still looking for some ways to pass the time away, you can play a game; try Sudoku or grab the local paper to finish the crossword puzzle. If you are with your family, you all can play Scrabble or Yahtzee. This will surely make time pass quickly.
